Pediatric Fracture Care
Pediatric Broken Bone & Fracture Care Hotline
When a child breaks a bone, it is scary and painful, and the long wait in the Emergency Room makes it even more stressful. Leading Pediatric Surgeon, Bret Baynham, MD, gives parents a better solution – one stop fracture care at Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute.
When a child breaks a bone, it is a very stressful and painful situation for the child and the parent alike. The first impulse a mom or dad has when a child is hurt is to rush to the nearest emergency room. According to leading pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Bret Baynham, MD at Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute, a better solution exists. Dr. Baynham says, “When parents go to the ER with a child who has suffered with a broken bone, they often have to wait many hours. Even then the ER attending physician will ultimately refer them to an orthopedic specialist who may not be immediately available. This multi-step process will prolong the child’s discomfort, create unneeded additional anxiety and delay treatment.”
In reality, these injuries can be correctly diagnosed and treated with expert care in as little as 2 hours. In response to the shortcomings in the current system of ER fracture care, Dr. Baynham and his team created the Broken Bone & Fracture Care Hotline at PBOI (561) 727-1334.
The Broken Bone and Fracture Care Hotline makes it easy for parents to have their child seen by a specialist who treats the child on the day of the accident. When the injury is treated efficiently, the event is much less traumatic for the child and the parents.
Dr. Baynham also advises that when a child suffers a broken bone, parents should immediately:
- Apply ice to the most painful region
- Protect the injured extremity from movement or weight bearing
- Look for open wounds, bleeding, loss of feeling or movement which may indicate a more serious type of injury.
