Knee

Welcome to the Knee Center

The knee is a complex joint made up of different structures including bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles. They all work together to maintain normal function and provide stability to the knee. The knee joints can wear out over the years due to disease, arthritis, or injury that can disturb the normal functioning of the knee resulting in pain, muscle weakness, and limited movement. Our practitioners tailor treatment to each individual, utilizing precise and expert skill. Our Fellowship Trained physicians at Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute have completed advanced training in the knee. With this advanced training, our knee specialists have the experience and expertise to assess, diagnose, and treat your knee injury or condition individually to your needs. Our surgeons are proficient in the latest joint replacement procedures, including minimally invasive and robotic assisted techniques.

Anatomy

The knee is the body's largest joint. It's the place where three bones meet: the tibia, the femur and the patella. The knee is a "hinge" joint. It allows the leg to bend in one direction only. Tendons connect the knee bones to the leg muscles that move the knee joint. Ligaments join the knee bones and provide stability to the knee.

Diagnostics

If you experience consistent pain in your daily activities, you should be evaluated by our orthopaedic specialists. Your physician will perform a physical exam of your knee to evaluate range of motion and will look for signs of swelling, tenderness and stiffness. They will conduct a radiographic exam to determine the loss of cartilage and joint space in the knee. Further exams including possible labs or MRI may be warranted based on exam findings.

Conditions

Your knees are vulnerable to a wide range of chronic conditions and acute injuries that result in pain. Knee pain can severely limit daily activity and diminish quality of life. The most common causes of knee pain are injuries such as sprains, fractures and ligament tears. Arthritis, cartilage damage and other degeneration can be the cause of knee pain. We treat all acute and chronic conditions involving the knee, including:
